First I tried scrolling through fancy art websites. Total waste of time – everything looked like it needed a PhD in brush techniques. Closed my laptop so hard the cat jumped off the couch.

Grabbed my muddy garden shoes and stomped outside. No big nature trips, just stood in my own dandelion-infested lawn. Watched how sunlight hit the neighbor’s bright pink azaleas spilling over their rusty fence. That clash of colors? Perfect.
Kitchen Experiments
Got distracted making coffee later and noticed how morning light bled through my grandmother’s old jelly jars on the windowsill. Threw some quick watercolor washes on scrap paper right there with coffee still brewing. Didn’t look like much but felt like cracking a code.
My Actual Painting Steps
- Smashed cheap kid’s tempera paint onto cardboard for background texture
- Used that azalea pink straight from the tube, no mixing
- Dipped an old credit card in green paint to scrape on stem shapes
- Splattered sunlight-yellow with a toothbrush
Took maybe 20 minutes total. Looks messy close up but captures that spring explosion feeling from ten feet away. Hung it on my fridge next to takeout menus where all real art belongs.
What Actually Works
Forget galleries or hashtags. The fastest inspiration came from:
- Dirty everyday things (that rusty fence was key!)
- Not overthinking color combos
- Using whatever junk was within arm’s reach
