Frank Frazetta Similar Artists: My Little Search Journey
So, I’ve been on a bit of a kick lately, really diving back into Frank Frazetta’s art. Man, that guy’s stuff just hits different, you know? The power, the movement, the atmosphere – it’s just awesome. And it got me thinking, who else out there captures even a little bit of that same vibe? I decided to do a little digging, see what I could find.
My first step was pretty basic. I just opened up my browser and started typing stuff in. Things like "artists like Frazetta," "Frazetta style," "epic fantasy artists," that sort of thing. You gotta start somewhere, right?
A few names popped up right away, the ones you kinda expect. Boris Vallejo, for sure. His stuff has that heroic fantasy feel, lots of muscles and dramatic poses. And his wife, Julie Bell, too. Their work is often mentioned in the same breath, and you can see why. Very polished, very dynamic.

Then I remembered Ken Kelly. I read somewhere that he actually studied with Frazetta or was heavily mentored by him, something like that. So I looked him up specifically. And yeah, you can definitely see the influence there. The compositions, the raw energy, it’s got that Frazetta DNA.
But I wanted to go beyond the most obvious comparisons. I started thinking about what aspects of Frazetta's work I was drawn to. It's not just barbarians and monsters. It's the lighting, the kind of gritty, almost primal feel. So I tried searching for terms like "dark fantasy art," "sword and sorcery illustrators," and "pulp cover artists."
This led me down a few different paths. I stumbled upon some older illustrators, guys who were contemporaries or part of that same pulp tradition. It's interesting to see the lineage, how styles evolve.
I also started looking through art communities online. Not just searching, but browsing. Sometimes you find gems by just looking at what other artists are inspired by, or who they follow. I spent a good while just scrolling through images, looking for that certain something.
I came across artists like Jeff Jones (sometimes credited as Jeffrey Catherine Jones). A bit different, maybe more ethereal sometimes, but there's a certain shared sensibility in some of his fantasy pieces. And then there's Michael Whelan, who does a lot of sci-fi and fantasy book covers. His style is more refined in a different way, but he definitely knows how to create an epic scene.

It's funny, the more I looked, the more I realized "similar" can mean a lot of things.
- Is it the subject matter?
- Is it the brushwork?
- Is it the mood?
For me, it’s a combination. I found some modern artists whose work has a bit of that Frazetta grit, even if their subject matter is different. People like Brom came to mind. His stuff is dark, for sure, and has a real visceral quality. And Simon Bisley, his comic art has that over-the-top energy that feels Frazetta-esque in spirit, even if the style is more graphic.
So, yeah, that was my little expedition. I didn't find anyone who's a carbon copy of Frazetta – and that's a good thing, everyone should have their own voice. But I definitely found a bunch of artists whose work resonates in a similar way, or who share some of that awesome, powerful DNA. It was a fun process, just exploring and seeing what’s out there. Still got a lot more art to check out, I reckon.
