So, about these odyssey drawings I've been messing with. It’s been a bit of a trip, not gonna lie. Didn't exactly set out to become some kind of artist, you know? It just sort of… happened. One day I was just fiddling around, and the next, I’m staring at a pile of sketches wondering where the time went.

How It All Kicked Off

If I’m being honest, I started this whole drawing thing because I was bored stiff. Remember that phase when everyone was suddenly baking bread or learning the ukulele? Well, my oven's terrible and I’m tone-deaf. So, drawing it was. I found an old sketchbook, probably from a long-forgotten New Year's resolution, and a couple of pencils that weren't completely blunt.

My first attempts? Absolute chaos. I mean, I tried to draw a tree, and it looked more like a broccoli that had a fight with a lawnmower. Seriously, it was bad. My cat gave it a look, then walked away in what I can only describe as disgust. But there was something about it, you know? Just making marks on paper. No pressure, no one looking over my shoulder, except the cat, judging silently.

So, I just kept at it. My "practice," if you can call it that, was pretty random.

  • Sometimes I'd try to copy things I saw around the house – a coffee mug, a crumpled receipt, my own hand (which is surprisingly hard to draw without it looking like a bunch of sausages).
  • Other times, I'd just let the pencil wander. Doodles, mostly. Weird shapes that sometimes turned into something vaguely recognizable.
  • I didn’t buy fancy stuff. Just cheap printer paper when the sketchbook ran out, and whatever pens or pencils were lying around. One time I even used one of those free pens you get from hotels. The ink was blotchy, but hey, it made a mark.

The "odyssey" part for me isn't about drawing grand adventures or mythical creatures. It's more about the struggle to get something, anything, from my brain onto the page. It's a journey through my own head, trying to figure out how to see things, not just look at them. Sounds a bit dramatic, I know, but that’s how it feels sometimes.

What I've Figured Out (Sort Of)

I haven't suddenly become a master artist. Far from it. My drawings are still pretty rough. Some days, I look at what I’ve done and just think, "Well, that’s an hour I’m not getting back." But it’s not really about the final product, is it? At least, not for me.

It's become this weird little ritual. I’ll put on some music, grab my stuff, and just get lost in it for a bit. It’s calming, in a frustrating sort of way. You focus so hard on trying to get a line right, or a shadow to look like a shadow, that you forget about other stuff for a while. That’s the real win, I think.

And you know what’s funny? I started this thing thinking it was just about drawing. But it’s made me notice more. Little details. The way light hits things, the funny shapes of clouds, the expression on someone’s face. It’s like my eyes got a bit of an upgrade, even if my hand still has a long way to go to catch up.

So yeah, these odyssey drawings. They’re not masterpieces. They’re just… my scribbles. My messy, imperfect attempts to put something down on paper. And I guess I’ll just keep at it, see where this particular odyssey takes me. Maybe one day I'll draw a tree that actually looks like a tree. Or maybe not. Either way, it’s been an interesting ride so far.
