What kinds of weird painting really grab you? (Find out about surreal stuff and other odd art styles)

So, I got this idea in my head the other day, "Hey, why not try to make a weird painting?" I wasn't aiming for a masterpiece or anything, just something... well, weird. You know, like those paintings that make you tilt your head and go "huh?" I've heard folks talk about surrealism, how it's all about dreams and the stuff that doesn't make logical sense. Sounded like fun, so I thought I'd give it a shot, let my inner weirdo take the brush.

First off, I rummaged through my art supplies. Found an old canvas, a bit dusty but usable. Then I grabbed my acrylic paints – a mix of cheap tubes and some surprisingly decent ones I'd forgotten I had. The main plan? No plan at all. Just dive in and see what happens. That’s the best way to get weird, I figured.

Getting Started with the Mess

I started by just squeezing some colors directly onto the canvas. No finesse, just pure color chaos. I wasn't thinking about blending or any of that proper art stuff. My first victims were a bright, almost neon green and a deep, moody blue. I just smeared them around with a palette knife, which I rarely use, but it felt right for this. It immediately made this gross, swampy color, but hey, we're going for weird, not pretty.

Then I started adding shapes. Big, blocky things, squiggly lines, dots. It felt pretty liberating, not having to make things look like actual things. My kitchen table, where I was doing this, quickly started to look like it had been attacked by a paint monster. My dog just lay there, watching me with that "what on earth are you doing?" look. He’s seen me do some odd stuff, but this was a new level, I guess.

When Things Took a Turn

This is when it really started to live up to the "weird" ambition. I took a big dollop of red paint and sort of… flicked it. It splattered in a way that, for a split second, I swear looked like a distorted face. It was a bit creepy, actually. Then it just became a red splotch. But that image stuck in my head. My "unconscious mind," or whatever, was clearly having a field day.

I kept at it for a while, layering paint, scraping some bits off, even using an old toothbrush to spray some fine specks of black. My hands were caked in paint. I probably had it in my hair too. It was a proper mess. It kind of reminded me of when I was a kid and tried to "help" my dad paint the shed. I ended up more painted than the shed, and the shed had handprints all over it. Good times, but probably not for my dad.

I remember reading somewhere that this kind of art, the bizarre stuff, it's about breaking rules and letting unexpected things happen. Well, I was definitely breaking some rules of good taste, that’s for sure.

The Grand Unveiling (to Myself)

Finally, I decided I'd tortured the canvas enough. I propped it up against the wall and stepped back. And yeah, it was… weird. Definitely achieved that goal. It wasn't beautiful, not in the traditional sense. It was a jumble of colors and textures that didn't quite make sense together, but somehow, it felt complete in its weirdness.

What did it look like? Well:

  • There was a lot of that swampy green, more than I intended.
  • Some weird, unexpected orange bits popped out in places.
  • The texture was all over the place – smooth here, really rough and scratchy there.
  • And if I stared long enough, I could still sort of see that distorted face in the red splotch. Or maybe I was just imagining it.

I let it dry overnight. Looked at it again in the morning light. Still weird. I haven't figured out what to do with it. Maybe I’ll hang it in the bathroom, just to confuse guests. Or maybe I'll paint over it and start another weird adventure. The fun part was just the process, you know? Just making something without any pressure for it to be "good."

It’s kind of funny, I didn’t think much about it, just went for it. And out came this… thing. It’s not going in a gallery, but it was a pretty interesting way to spend an afternoon. If you’re ever bored, I’d say give it a try. Grab some paints, don't overthink it, and just make your own weird painting. You might surprise yourself, or at least have a good laugh.
